Southern Illinois University athletic teams have a distinction of having a name that somewhat stands out from the usual animal names. The Southern Illinois Salukis play for the university in athletic competitions. Southern Illinois has the nickname "Little Egypt" and Saluki is a dog breed that has an association with Egypt, and this is how the teams got the nickname. Their mascot are the Salukis called Brown Dawg & Gray Dawg.
